DAY6: Totally Your Type for Rocking Afternoon

Mei 20, 2016

Currently listening to this quintet rookie-rock band from South Korea. Don't compare them with any other boy-groups/idols you mostly know from Hallyu wave. They're rock band type with original talent and music. Talented in playing instruments, singing, produce songs, arranging album, that totally worth-it to watch out.  What's make this band is so unique that they can play the instruments and undoubtly good singers except the drummer (but soon he'll be).

They do the promotion with street live performance, showcase and busking. Formed by a famous label in South Korea, JYP Entertainment, they're recruited from singing auditions and contests.

If you still think that South Korean music, is about some skinny boy with colorful hair, wears mascara and fancy clothes, doing dance... come on open your eyes..

I ain't no type for listening because of the looks. Good music is good, apart from where it's come from, what it's language. Music for me is about tune, harmonius, emotion, expression, eargasm, and i found them in DAY6, beside Hyukoh. But if you find good visual and good music combined, sure, why not?

Their songs
As long as I listening to their songs, they have pop-rock, electronic-fun, upbeat feeling but sometimes emotional and intense. Overall their songs are very listener-friendly, mostly filled with strong vocal and in high tone, sometimes falsetto. Totally type for jamming to brighten the day. Totally far from your expectation about mainstream Korean music you know.

Most of their songs, agreeing One Hallyu opinion, have the same cooling impact, with not one that is raging hot or outstanding. Even don't know the whole meaning of the lyric, I'll sing along with these incredibly talented kids. They already expressed the meaning in their harmonious tune and vocal. Then I know that mostly their songs encompass first love, break-ups, and true love.

My favorite: Habits, from 1st mini album

They already released 2 mini albums
As far, they released 2 mini album and all songs therein are perfect. 1st album The Day6 (2015), are their 1st album with the ex-member, Junghyeok still contributing in vocal and keyboard. Unfortunately, with personal reason, he left. He has clear and good voice and he has fun vibe in team. The 2nd album, Daydream (2016), with other good songs with similar type. Totally worth to listen.

The first mini-album has peaked at #2 on U.S. World charts and #6 on Korean charts. While the second mini album has peaked at #6 on U.S. World charts and #4 on Korean charts. It's unexpected high.

They're influenced by The Script and Maroon 5. Undoubtly, as a bunch talented kids, all members have participated in the lyrics and composition of every song from the debut album to the new album. It's so DAY6 style. Rock and rap! They just focus to the music. Far from visual-focus like idols, they're casually have natural-look.

They also decently did some cover: High and Dry of Radiohead, Baby of Justin Bieber, Stop and Share, Good Life of One Republic, She Will be Loved of Maroon 5, Officialy Missing You of Tamia, Happy of Pharrel William, All of Me John Legend, Locked Out of Heaven of Bruno Mars, medley some Bruno Mars songs. My favorite is Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae. And playlist of their covers gonna be so long.. there are so many of them

With their style, they also covered the song from their label mates: OOHH-AAH of Twice, Bad Girl Good Girl of Miss A, Confession Song GOT7, Only You of 2PM, Nobody of Wonder Girls, Baek Yerin, etc.

About the members
First time I'm impressed, I see their live performance videos. I automatically enchanted to Sungjin vocal: versatile and stable with emotion inherent. Sometimes it can be gentle suitably for ballad, but can raspy and strong yet lovely. He's main vocal that always take part at peak tune on many their songs. He plays acoustic sometimes electric guitar, and appeared in some television programs before debut in DAY6.

Then there's Wonpil, play the keyboard and synthesizer with unique vocal color. It's like honey poured over his voice tune. There's Jae and Brian, who i can differentiate each others at first. Then I know that Brian is the one who mostly take rap part. Jae is the one who look like a cute lil chick with spectacles -then in real life he likes chicken. Both can speak English, because Brian is from Canada and Jae from California. Brian play bass guitar, and Jae play electric guitar. Both are wear earrings, and recently blonde! And lastly added to team, Dowoon, the youngest who play drum.
sorry for the typo, Dowoon not Doowon :P

Sungjin is generally the leader with Busan-manly-man type, who always dance with uncontrolled facial muscle. Brian is like gangster.. multitalented gangster actually, but has sweet pitch falsetto, you can see it when he covered Lost Star (Adam Levine). Jae has that husky low voice, you can hear it when he was doing cover Sunday Morning of Maroon 5. Wonpil is the cutie-aegyo fake-maknae (fake-youngest) with honey voice. Doowon is the real youngest one, shy but cool once he's being the drummer on-stage.

They are totally musicians that I'll go to their concert, because their live performance is freaking good. Anticipate them to grow up more in the future!
